Madrid can well ignore the avant-garde of Spanish painting; but this avant-garde will be in place in this avant-post of Spanish culture at the young Spanish College of the Cite Universitaire of Paris.
Exile and foreign confrontations have fomented an authentic face of a culture which the too self-satisfied and too self-hyped official entries deform. Spain's best painting is in Paris today, and it is in Paris that it can conceive itself, feel itself, affirm itself as Spanish painting, as art and act genuinely representing Spanish genius.
