"The Gerassis played an important role in my life. Fernando, who lived half the time in Spain, where he was the director of an electrical firm, and the rest of the time in Paris, was interested in my artistic efforts.

I often went to his studio where, if he didn't teach me much about technique, since he wasn't himself a technician, he nevertheless taught me how to look at art. He gave an artists eye, and taught me to level it on everything, the most important attribute for a painter.

He used to tell me "You don't dare enough!"

Thanks to Fernando Gerassi I began to understand that my respect for classicism, my desire to be in its mode, to partake of its rules, straight-jacketed me. I didn't dare to be myself because I didn't think I had the right to be. "Be more modern," he used to say.
